Wolverton Litter Pickers

In recent months, you might have seen some volunteers taking part in various litter picks around Wolverton. The local group, called Wolverton Litter Pickers, was established just a few months ago and they are doing a great job of keeping our local area tidy. We wanted to know a little bit more about the group, so we asked Daniel Fredriksson some questions about the initiative.

How did the Wolverton Litter Pickers get started?

I’ve been doing local litter picks on my own or with my family across Wolverton for a few years.  I joined any group litter picks that I saw that tended to come around in the springtime.  Whilst I was doing these regularly, I thought there must be others who are thinking and doing the same as me.  In the summer of 2021, one of the local Facebook groups asked about getting something set up – so a few of us jumped at the chance to set up a dedicated Facebook group to build up a bit of a community of volunteers who would be willing to get out and litter pick the local area. The Wolverton Litter Pickers group was born. Fast forward 9 months and we’ve done 6 picks, picked hundreds of sacks of rubbish and we’re constantly growing the community.

How can people get involved?

We are running the litter picks every 6 weeks in Wolverton, and we tend to set up in two separate sites. The next one will be between 10:00 and 12:00 on Sunday 24th July, just in time to get the town sparkling for the start of the summer holidays! We will have one group set up just outside Bar Bar Café, in the Square, Wolverton. The other site will be set up outside the Leisure Centre. All the necessary equipment will be provided, including litter pickers; bag hoops and bin bags; gloves; hi viz vests. Just remember to wear sturdy footwear and keep an eye on the weather! Be ready to grab some sunscreen. We tend to allocate streets as volunteers arrive, but we always do our best to let people choose for themselves.

We tend to get around 30 volunteers for the events, which is great. The more people we have, the greater coverage we get of cleaning the town. It is making a real difference. We have noticed that it’s getting harder to fill the sacks – it shows that what we are doing is working! There’s still plenty to do, so please come along.

What happens to the rubbish?

We always arrange for the council’s contractor, Serco, to come and collect all the rubbish the volunteers pick up. We often have a little competition to see who finds the funniest, or most bizarre litter. Some of our favourites have included a FIFA 2017 video game for PlayStation 4; A folding Thermos portable teaspoon; a single sequinned Princess shoe (maybe there’s a Cinderella out there looking for it) and a Japanese Kabuki mask!
